Diseases On The Skin
Skin diseases are of many times. By physical examination of the skin, it becomes easy to diagnose the disease because the things are visible. While exammining the skin the doctor looks for the colour and the texture of the skin for eruptions, erythemas or hyperaemia of the skin, cyanosis, primary and secondary lesions, such as macules, papules, vesicles, pustules, weals, scars, ulceration, oedema, pigmentation, atrphy of hair(alopecia) etc. Also by palpation check the heat, tenderness, smoothness, whether the eruptions on pressure.
Macules are un-elevated discoloured spots due to increasee or decrease of melanin, blood or bloood pigments
or due to some extraneous matter. The lesion is one cm in diameter or less, larger lesioons being described
as patches. Macules may be erythematous or purpuric. Some of the examples of these macules are various
erythemas e.g chilblains, pityriasis rosea etc. Measles, rashes, naevi.
Papules are solid, skin coloured or pink elevation upto 1 cm in diameter. Large elevations are spoken of as
plaques e.g acne, lichen, wen or sebacious cysts, warts etc.
Vesicles are circumscribed collection of translucent fluid (a blister within the epidermis, often
surrounding a papule). Its diameter is upto 0.5 cm. above which the expression bulla is used e.g prickly
heat(Miliaria),pemphigus,insect bites.
Pustules are circumscribed collection of opaque fluid(pus) of similar size of a vesicle. Many pustules are
follicular e.g furuncles or boils, whitlow, styes, carbuncles.
Weals are pale or pink oedematous papules or plaque with surrounding red flare. The best example is that or
urticaria.
There can be secondary lesions like fissures, desquamation, pigmentation, ulceration , scar formation or
cicatrices.
